The Detroit Bathroom Problem

Detroit's housing stock is among the oldest in the region, and the original 5-foot cast iron tubs are still in place in a huge share of neighborhood bungalows in Bagley, East English Village, Rosedale Park and Boston-Edison. Those tubs are heavy, deep, and increasingly hard to step into.

Housing here is largely pre-war brick bungalows and two-family flats, most built 1915-1940, and that shapes everything about a conversion: how the tub comes out, what's behind the wall, and how long we're in your house. We've done enough Detroit bathrooms to know what we're walking into, which is why we quote a fixed price instead of an hourly rate that grows once the wall is open.

Wayne County Access and Parking

Practical detail people don't think about until the day: we need to get a tub out and a shower base in. In tighter Detroit streets and older homes with narrow doorways and turns at the top of the stairs, that's a real consideration.

We cut cast iron down in place rather than carrying it out whole, which solves most of it. But it's worth mentioning your layout when you call — a second-floor bathroom at the end of a tight hallway is a different quote than a main-floor one.

How a Detroit Install Works

  1. Free quote

Call, or email a photo. We give you a real fixed number, not a range.

  2. Old tub comes out

Removed and hauled away. Cast iron gets cut down in place.

  3. Base & walls go in

Low-threshold base, grout-free waterproof panels, grab bars into solid blocking.

  4. Cleaned up and gone

Fixtures on, everything hauled away, floors left clean. Same day.

If you're comparing quotes, ask the other companies two things: is the price fixed, and how many days will you be without a bathroom? Those two answers separate a conversion specialist from a general remodeler who also does bathrooms.

Detroit — Common Questions

What if my bathroom is really small?

Small bathrooms are most of what we work in. That's usually an argument for a conversion rather than against one — a tub occupies about 13 square feet of a room that might only have 40, and a shower in that same footprint makes the space genuinely bigger to move around in. For very tight rooms, a cutout is often the smarter call.

What happens if you find something unexpected behind the wall?

In Detroit's older homes it happens — rotted subfloor, a previous repair done badly, galvanized pipe that shouldn't go back into service. We stop and talk to you before we spend any of your money. You'll get the options and the costs, and you decide. What we don't do is keep working and hand you a bigger invoice at the end.

What about grout — will I have to scrub it?

No. Everything we install is grout-free: acrylic wall panels or tongue-and-groove tile that locks together with no grout lines at all. There's nothing for mildew to get into. It's the feature people mention most a year later.

Can you make it wheelchair accessible?

Yes. We install fully barrier-free roll-in bases with zero threshold in 60″×30″, 60″×32″ and 60″×36″, plus L-shape transfer walk-in tubs that open the entire end of the tub for a seated transfer. Tell us the situation on the phone and we'll spec it properly rather than selling you a standard unit.

What's the difference between a cutout and a full conversion?

A cutout ($1,550) keeps your existing tub and cuts a low step-through opening in the side of it, finished with a molded insert. A full conversion ($6,995) removes the tub entirely and replaces it with a walk-in shower. The cutout is faster and much cheaper; the conversion gives you a proper shower and more usable floor space. We'll tell you which one your situation actually calls for.

Do I have to be home while you work?

Someone should be there at the start so we can walk through it together, and at the end for the handover. In between you're welcome to go out. We cover the floors, we work clean, and we haul everything away — you shouldn't be able to tell we were anywhere except the bathroom.
